| Yacht Te Aroha Features: Te Aroha the last of her kind, and of the Mosquito Fleet, the solid wooden ships that serviced the river settlements and ports around the New Zealand coast. Built in 1909 of Northland Kauri by T.M. Lane and Son of Totara North, the Te Aroha spent her early years trading in the Hawkes Bay area.
In 1928 a change of owners took her to Nelson and for the next 48 years she was a frequent visitor to the West Coast Ports of the South Island and Lower North Island. She became a familiar site in Wellington having crossed the notorious Cook Strait 10,000 times before finishing working out of Nelson in 1976.
The Te Aroha was brought to Auckland in 1981 and commenced a cargo passenger service to Great Barrier Island. In 1986 she was retired from cargo work and refitted for passenger service, this included the installation of showers, toilets and cabins.
